Pécs, starting from the front door.
Two thousand years – Roman burial chambers, Ottoman mosques, Zsolnay eosin glaze and a Mecsek panorama – all within walking distance of the apartment. This is Edit's personal travel guide, with real walking minutes.
If you stay at Sweet House, the main sights of the city centre are within 20 minutes on foot: Széchenyi Square with the Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim and the Zsolnay Fountain (~11 min), Király Street (~9 min), the museums of Káptalan Street (~15 min), Cella Septichora and the Early Christian burial chambers that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage (~16 min), the Cathedral (~18 min) and the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter (~19 min). Harkány, Siklós and Orfű are within half an hour by car.

Twelve places you shouldn't miss.
Széchenyi Square & the Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim
The heart of Pécs, with a sloping main square and the mosque church built in the 16th century – the largest Ottoman-era building still standing in Hungary, which today serves as a Catholic church. A special place where the cross and the crescent meet on one dome.
Zsolnay Fountain
The Zsolnay factory gave it to the city in 1892. Water flows from its ox heads, and its glaze shows off Pécs's speciality, the greenish-burgundy shimmer of eosin. A typical meeting point in Pécs.
Király Street & the National Theatre
The most beautiful pedestrian street in the centre: ornate facades, cafés, terraces and a lively atmosphere in the evenings. The magnificent building of the National Theatre of Pécs stands in the middle.
Synagogue & Kossuth Square
One of the nearest sights: the interior of the 19th-century synagogue on Kossuth Square is a hidden treasure of the city.
Mecsek Pastry Shop
An iconic pastry shop in Pécs on Széchenyi Square. Edit's tip: the poppy-seed or lemon ice cream and the Ischler with homemade jam.
Káptalan Street – the street of museums
A little cobbled street full of museums. Here you find the museum of Victor Vasarely, the op-art master born in Pécs, and the collection of Zsolnay ceramics.
Csontváry Museum
The most important collection of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka – the famous Lonely Cedar is on display here too.
Cella Septichora & the Early Christian burial chambers
The Early Christian cemetery of Roman Sopianae, with painted burial chambers underground – the city's World Heritage treasure. In the visitor centre under Dóm Square you can walk among them.
Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul
The four-towered cathedral is the symbol of the Pécs skyline – we drew it at the bottom of this page too. Dóm Square and the surrounding Bishop's Palace are the calmest, most beautiful part of the centre.
Mosque of Pasha Hassan Jakovali
A smaller but fully preserved mosque with a minaret – one of the best-preserved Ottoman monuments in Hungary.
Barbican and the city wall
A park promenade runs around the round bastion of the medieval city wall – especially beautiful in the evening lights.
Zsolnay Cultural Quarter
The renovated grounds of the former Zsolnay porcelain factory: exhibitions, demonstration workshops, children's programmes, cafés and open-air events. Reserve half a day for it!
Three days in Pécs – Edit's recommendation.
